The rules — how a round of blackjack works
- The goal is simple: beat the dealer's hand without your total going over 21 (‘busting’). You play only against the dealer, never the other seats.
- Cards are worth their number; J, Q and K are worth 10; an Ace is 1 or 11, whichever helps. An Ace plus any 10-value card on your first two cards is a ‘blackjack’ and pays 3:2.
- You are dealt two cards face-up. The dealer takes one card face-up and one face-down (the ‘hole card’). You act first.
- On your turn you can Hit (take a card), Stand (keep your total), Double (double the bet and take exactly one more card), or Split (turn two same-value cards into two hands). Some tables add Surrender.
- When you stand, the dealer reveals the hole card and must draw to a fixed rule — hitting until 17, then standing (on some tables they hit a ‘soft 17’).
- Closest to 21 wins. Bust and you lose at once, even if the dealer busts afterwards. A tie is a ‘push’ and your bet is returned.

The edge — and what moves it
Basic strategy, in a nutshell
Basic strategy is simply the best move for every hand-versus-dealer-upcard situation — and it’s the only “strategy” that genuinely helps. A few of its most reliable rules: always split aces and 8s; never split 10s or 5s; stand on hard 17 or more; double a hard 11; and always hit a soft 17 or lower. The full chart covers every case — most online tables even let you check it as you play. It doesn’t make blackjack a winning game; it makes it the least-losing one.
What doesn’t work
Card counting doesn’t work online: the RNG effectively reshuffles every hand, so there’s no count to keep, and live tables shuffle frequently. Betting systems (Martingale and the rest) don’t change the edge either — see games & odds. And insurance and most side bets carry a much higher edge than the main game, so basic strategy skips them. No. Online blackjack uses a certified random number generator that effectively reshuffles every hand, so there's nothing to count. Live-dealer tables use frequent shuffles and other measures too. Card counting is a live-venue technique, not an online one.
