Baccarat looks mysterious but is one of the simplest bets in the casino: three options, no decisions after you bet, and a low edge — if you avoid the one trap.
You bet on Banker, Player or Tie. Two hands are dealt, and whichever totals closest to nine wins (tens and face cards count as zero; only the last digit of a total counts). Whether a third card is drawn follows fixed rules — neither you nor the dealer chooses. That’s the whole game, which is why the only thing that affects your odds is which of the three bets you place.
Casinos hand out scorecards (“roads”) tracking Banker/Player streaks, and they’re fun — but each coup is independent, so past results predict nothing. No pattern-spotting or staking system changes the edge; they just change how the wins and losses are spread. What is the house edge in baccarat?
It depends on the bet. The Banker bet has the lowest house edge at about 1.06% (after the usual 5% commission on Banker wins). The Player bet is about 1.24%. The Tie is far worse — roughly 14% — which is why it's considered a sucker bet.

Banker. Even with the 5% commission taken from winning Banker bets, it has the lowest house edge (~1.06%), slightly better than Player (~1.24%). The Tie's big 8:1 payout hides a ~14% edge — avoid it.
Is there any skill in baccarat?
Almost none. After you place your bet, the draw of the third card follows fixed rules — you make no decisions. The only choice that affects your odds is which of the three bets you make, and Banker is mathematically the best.
Do baccarat patterns or scorecards work?
No. Each coup is independent, so the streaks and patterns on the scorecards ('roads') that casinos provide have no predictive power. They're a tradition, not a system — nothing changes the house edge.
