Baccarat looks mysterious but is one of the simplest bets in the casino: three options, no decisions after you bet, and a low edge — if you avoid the one trap.
The rules — how a round of baccarat works
- Two hands are dealt — ‘Player’ and ‘Banker’. You simply bet on which will be closer to a total of nine, or on a Tie. You never play a hand yourself.
- Cards 2–9 are face value; 10s and face cards are worth zero; an Ace is one. Only the last digit of the total counts — so 7 + 6 = 13 becomes 3.
- Both hands get two cards. A third card may be drawn, but by fixed rules the dealer follows automatically — there are no choices for you to make.
- The hand closest to nine wins. Banker wins pay even money minus a 5% commission; Player wins pay even money; a Tie pays 8:1.
- Because the Banker hand wins slightly more often, it carries the lowest edge (1.06%). Player is 1.24%. The Tie's ~14% edge makes it the worst bet on the table.

How a hand plays out
You bet on Banker, Player or Tie. Two hands are dealt, and whichever totals closest to nine wins (tens and face cards count as zero; only the last digit of a total counts). Whether a third card is drawn follows fixed rules — neither you nor the dealer chooses. That’s the whole game, which is why the only thing that affects your odds is which of the three bets you place.
Why patterns and systems don’t help
Casinos hand out scorecards (“roads”) tracking Banker/Player streaks, and they’re fun — but each coup is independent, so past results predict nothing. No pattern-spotting or staking system changes the edge; they just change how the wins and losses are spread.
